Distance Education Annamalai University established in 1979 and provides more than 400 different correspondence courses and regular courses of study. Directorate of Distance Education Annamalai University is credited with the biggest enrolment in India education and is properly geared up with computer and other infrastructure, highly quality faculty and administrative set-up of its own, excellent study centres, computer training centres, etc., to serve its students' clientele in their excellent interest at their door steps. Distance Education Annamalai University has also offering Postgraduate Degree Programmes in Applied Psychology, Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Bioinformatics and Law through Distance Education mode.

All the Distance Education Courses of Annamalai University recognized by Distance Education Council, New Delhi. The Directorate is introducing B.Ed. Programme through distance learning mode from the year 2008-09 with the approval of National Council for Teacher Education, New Delhi.
