GETTING an admission at IIM, Shillong, may no longer be a battle of nerves for the aspirants. The final- year students of one of the top- notch management institutes in the country have teamed up to offer free guidance and interview tips to the shortlisted candidates who have cleared the preliminary round of the selection process. Christened ‘ Synapse,’ the mentorship programme functions online and offers support for IIM aspirants who have cleared the written test.
The word is of Greek origin and means together and to clasp. We get a lot of enquires from the students on how to prepare for the group discussion and interview after the written round, said Sidharth Shankar Prasad, a final- year student at IIM who is among a team of 60 students who offer the counseling.
We share our experience with the students and also advice them on how to face the interview panel with confidence,” said Shankar. Some of the tips include reading and updating themselves with the latest current affairs, focusing on sectors such as the automobile, pharmaceuticals and steel industries.
Synapse, which was started in 2008, has already provided counseling to more than 500 aspiring candidates over the last two years. “ I still remember the frezy after the CAT 2008 results were announced,” recalled Priyanka Pandit, a participant in the mentorship programme last year. “ As the frequency of congragulatory phone calls decreased, the nervousness and doubts about the future increased. The team members guided me through the entire nerve wracking preparatory period, helping me with group discussion and interview,” said Priyanka.
For Swarnabha Mukherjee, the mentorship programme helped her understand the “ verve of the place” even before joining. “ The guidance programme is an avenue through which one can meet the prospective seniors and get a chance to feel the cooperative attitude and energy that is present on the campus,” said Mukherjee.
All shortlisted candidates can register themselves for the programme by logging on to www. iimshillong. in/ synapse/ synapse. asp. The site will become a part of the Google group after registration.
The site will also update them about the latest happenings in various sectors of the Business World. Besides guiding the students during the course of their preparation it will also provide them with a glimpse of life at IIM shillong. “ The programme will serve as a window to look at what comprises the work and culture at the institute,” said Harsha Jhunjhunwala, another final year student.
