A New Rs 11- crore, 100,000- square- feet aerospace facility at the Indian Institute of Science ( IISc), Bangalore, was inaugurated by Ratan Tata, the president of the court of the institute, on Friday. The revamped aerospace department will be followed by setting up of two new department buildings – biological sciences and nanotechnology. “ Our current place is more than 60 years old and the infrastructure is not good,” said Prof. B. N. Raghunandan, former chairperson of the aerospace department who planned the shift during his tenure till last year.
The new facility houses all the wings of the aerospace department, including its labs, close to the wind tunnel facility and an airstrip that can launch a hang glider or an unmanned aerial vehicle. There is plan for tying up with the Aeronautical Development Establishment ( ADE) that is coming up with a bigger airstrip near the proposed new campus of the institute in Chitradurga district where the state government has proposed to provide 1,000 acres for the new IISc campus. The department has some of the best equipped laboratories in Bangalore that generate design data for both Defence Research Development Organsiation and Indian Space Research Organisation.
