JNU campus to get WiFi-ed in four months
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students and faculty may soon be able to log into their computers through a campuswide WiFi network, covering hostels and residences. The university's efforts for a campuswide WiFi netword are again moving. Authorities plan to roll the project out in three phases.
"Phase I of the project, covering the academic block and projected to be competed in 2008, got delayed due to some security concerns," says Dr. Andrew Lynn, Director, Communication and Information Services, JNU.
The testing process is on under phase I and is expected to get over in four months. "We are testing the authentication for network access to make the network secure and be available to only authorised users,: add Lynn. All 16 university hostels will be covered in phase II. The residential area, university health cenre and student activity centre and likely to be completed in phase III.
Point to multipoint wireless connectivity has been proposed between the hostels, each cluster of residences (Uttarakhand, Dakshinapuram, Poorvanchal etc. ) and the existing campuswide network to ensure at least 108 Mbps backbone bandwidth.
At present, the university has a campuswide network connecting 26 buildings of the academic complex through a strong network running on a fibre optic bckbone with an intranet bandwidth of 1 Gbps and 16 Mbps of internet bandwidth.
