Every year, as thousands of students enter the hallowed grounds of Delhi’s Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) seeking admission, a sense of awe accosts them. And not without reason.
The college, which has yet again emerged as the best for commerce in the survey, is way ahead of the others. The other names in the top-three bracket in the stream also remain the same since 2008: St. Xavier’s College of Kolkata at No. 2 and Loyola of Chennai at No. 3 have merely swapped their positions.
Among the prominent gainers this year are Hansraj College of Delhi, up from 14th to ninth rank and Shri Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai, which has moved into the top 10 from its 11th position in 2008.
Showing a marked slip are two Chennai colleges, Presidency from seventh to 15th rank and Madras Christian College from the eighth position to No. 14.
In the reckoning this year are also colleges like Delhi’s Ramjas College, Pune’s Ness Wadia and Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce of Delhi at the 18th, 19th and 26th positions, while Jesus & Mary College of Delhi has moved from No. 40 to No. 21 and Queen Mary’s College of Chennai from No. 50 to No. 35. Prominent losers include Nizam College of Hyderabad at No. 42 from No. 23.
Back at SRCC, it’s only 551 of the 10,000-plus students who apply from across the country that end up getting a seat every year. The crème de la crème attracts some of the best recruiters like McKinsey, Bain and Deloitte who offer them compensation packages ranging between Rs 7 lakh and Rs 10 lakh per annum, equivalent to what some Tier II B-school students earn.
Over the years, SRCC has struck a balance between academic rigour and extra-curricular activities.
