Miranda House College was the first women’s college in DU to have the science stream. It began functioning on July 26, 1948, under the first principal Veda Thakuradas with six lecturers, three helpers, one housekeeper and three students. Today, it has more than 131 teaching staff, 1231 non-teaching staff and more than 20,000 students. The original design was by Walter George and the college shares an architectural affinity with other colonial educational institutions of the country. The hostel is among the oldest residential building of DU.
Miranda House, Delhi has been the pioneer institution of education of women. The university faculty is known for giving individual attention to students. The university was founded by vice president of the University of Delhi-Chancellor Sir Maurice Gwyer, and its foundation stone was laid by Lady Edwina Mountbatten, on 7 March of that year. The university societies to suit every passion of the dance drama to adventure questioning.
Courses and Programs in Miranda House College
BA with functional Hindi, BA (Hons) in English, Bengali, Hindi, Sanskrit, Economics, Geography, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, BEL ED, BSc (Hons) in botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology, BSc in life sciences and BSc in applied physical science. Diploma courses are available on medical biotech, green chemistry, operation research, tourism, translation, and media courses from radio jockeying to anchoring.
Miranda House is famous for English, Economics, Geography and Political Science Honors Courses. The College’s DS Kothari Centre for Research and Innovation in Science Education encourages under graduate students to engage in eco-friendly activities.
Infrastructure of Miranda House
The college has a library, a digital resource center, multimedia labs, seminar rooms, an auditorium seating about 1,000 and a science museum. The hostel has 125 rooms.
