IIT Madras was the former name of IIT Chennai (Indian Institute of Chennai). It was later changed to its current form when the city name was changed from Madras to Chennai in the year 1996. IIT Chennai is one of the best engineering institutes in India. It is considered today as one of the pioneers of educational institutions operating in the country. IIT Chennai has opened new opportunities and possibilities for their students over the years. IIT Madras students have achieved great heights in her career today with the support of education of the intensity, depth and research-based technique that has given them. The IIT Madras is an autonomous organization operating legally within the Institute of Technology law. The seven IIT are managed centrally by the IIT Council, a governing body established by the Government of India. The Minister of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, is the President of the Council. Each Institute has a Governing Board responsible for its administration and control.
About IIT Madras (IIT Chennai)
The Institute was established with technical assistance from Germany. Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Chennai) inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir in 1959. Humayun Kabir is an Union Minister of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs.
IIT Chennai is spread over a campus that covers 650 hectares with about 470 teachers, 4,600 students and 1,350 administrative and support staff. IIT Madras has fifteen academic departments, nearly 100 laboratories, 15 academic departments and centers in various disciplines of engineering and basic sciences. Much of the IIT campus is a spectacular carved protected forest in the Guindy National Park and is home of chital (spotted deer), black money, and other wildlife. A natural lake was deepened in 2003, collects most of its rainfall.
Today, IIT Madras has also made a name for himself on the world stage. IIT Madras has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with several global institutions. The aim of extending its global reach is to provide a platform for students where they can work in cooperative projects and tasks along with their global counterparts.
IIT Madras Admissions Procedure
Students wishing to apply for Courses B. Tech offers the institute have to sit for the Common Entrance Examination which is the common admission test for all the IITs in the country. The common entrance test is conducted in the month of April each year. Those wishing to apply for admission to graduate programs in engineering, technology, architecture and pharmacy have to sit for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). GATE students is an all India tests, they apply to management programs at IIT Madras has to sit for all management entrance tests (JMeter). JMeter is a common test that is conducted for admission to management courses of all the IITs and IISC..
But students also have to apply separately to each institute for admission. For admission to various postgraduate programs and MSC and 3-year after the programs B Sc, prospective students must submit the Joint Admission Test (JAM)
